This page is to give you information to prepare to bring your new kitten home!
When you come by car to pick them up please have a carrier. Also a kennel or big carrier for them so they can have a space for food and water and a small litter box if you are driving a long distance. They will be stressed and probably will not eat but they will need water and the litter box.
Please keep them on the diet they are used to at least until they settle in. I feed them Royal Canine Kitten dry food; which you can order on Amazon or get at Petco, Chewy.com and RoyalCanine.com. I will be sending some with you as well.
I let them eat as much dry kitten food all day long as they want. In the morning and evening I give them a wet canned food special for kittens (just two-three tablespoons is enough at first). Royal canine kitten instinctive or Royal canine babycat canned. I order them on Amazon but you can get it at Petco.
Royal Canine also has a website.
Please keep them quarantined from other pets and small children for at least two weeks and let them get used to the smells and noises of the house and one on one interaction with you first, from a safe place. Introduce them slowly over several days to other pets and small children for short periods of time. A stressed kitten will hide and may get ill, and extreme stress will alter their personality.
Please make the switch to a different food slowly, by mixing in a little at a time! Or you will have a kitten with diarrhea, possible vomiting, and other health issues. No milk or dairy products, they cause diarrhea. Even some of the "kitten milks" made for newborns will give an older kitten diarrhea, because their system changes and they become carnivores or meat eaters.
I switch my older kittens (after 11 months) and young adults to Royal Canine Adult . Please research cat foods. Cat foods are not regulated. I no longer use the extreme high protein, or extreme high fat adult foods because they can give a cat pancreatitis.
DO NOT USE CLUMPING LITTERS FOR KITTENS EVER EVER!
They are allergic to the highly chemicalized and scented brands of cat litter, their eyes will run. World's Best Cat Litter in the green bag is an excellent choice, also just the regular old style clay litter non-clumping by Tidy Cats is cheaper and works fine too, it is what I use for just weaned kittens! (low dust). If you go the Feline Pine route you can buy pine pellets in the equine section of Tractor Supply for $7.00 for 30 pounds. I would only use pine pellets for adults not kittens, remember kittens sometimes eat litter.
All of my adult cats, only adults not kittens, are on the Tidy Cats pellet system or
World's Best Cat Litter.
You have to kitten proof your home, just as you would baby proof because they will stick their claws in electric outlets, chew on electric cords, climb in any small hole like under the dishwasher or refrigerator or behind a lazy susan in your cupboard; or into a plastic bag, get tangled and strangle themselves with any dangling cord from curtains or blinds, climb in the dryer or dishwasher when you aren't looking, etc. Always think for them and ahead of them.
PLEASE DO NOT GIVE THEM STRING OR FEATHERS THEY MAY SWALLOW IT
PLEASE REMOVE ALL DANGLING THINGS FROM CAT TREES AND SO FORTH AS THEY COULD STRANGLE THEMSELVES WHILE YOU ARE NOT HOME.
They will have had their first set of shots (i.e. distemper shot,i.e. FVRCP), you will have to contact your vet to set up an appointment for their second. They will need three sets of shots, please always ask for non-adjuvanted vaccines if available, and read up on vaccinations for your kitten! Wait four weeks between shots. Their rabies shot will be given with their third kitten shot normally, I personally do the first rabies and third kitten shot together at closer to one year old. They will receive a one year rabies vaccine at first and then the next year they can start getting the three year vaccination. The less shots the better! I have seen a kitten react badly to a rabies shot, it is terrible, they can die or have organ failure. Therefore, if you can get a non-adjuvanted vaccine it will help, and the less shots the better! They do not need the feline leukemia addition to their kitten shot! This shot also has caused seizures and reactions in kittens, even death.
I hope this helps you with your preparation. We will see you all soon! Let me know your schedule for picking them up. (402 )432 1814
